NAPRI lauches cock exchange programme in Yobe

The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) has launched the 3rd phase of its Cock Exchange Programme in Damaturu, Yobe State.
A total of 150 cocks were distributed during the programme which was held at the Conference Hall of Yobe State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources on Thursday, 11th September, 2025.
The event was part of NAPRI's national mandate in disseminating research findings and appropriate technologies to animal producers, processors, and marketers to improve productivity and economic viability.
It was also part of the institute's monitoring and evaluation of its northeast geo-political zone outstation located in Damaturu.
The Executive Director, National Animal Production Research Institute, Prof Mohammed Rabiu Hassan, said at the event that the programme was launched in Yobe because of the outstation's geological coverage.
The outstation, built by Yobe State government for Ahmadu Bello University, serves Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, and Bauchi States.
He said the 20 hectare office was built to create employment and reduce food security restiveness in the geo-political zone.
Prof Hassan, who gave a general overview on NAPRI, used the occasion to enlighten the gathering on the mandate and activities of the outstation.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, who was ably represented by his Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Garba Tahir, expressed Yobe government's readiness for further support to the outstation.
Equally, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Sale Samanja, spoke, saying that his ministry was currently processing the Certificate of Occupancy for the outstation.
In his remarks, the Focal Person, Northeast Development Commission, Hon Nuhu Baba Hassan, assured ABU of the commission's support in the area of infrastructure development.
A high-powered delegation from Yobe State and key stakeholders in livestock production attended the programme.
They included Commissioner, Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Mairo Amshi; and Chairman, Fune Local Government, Alhaji Babakwani Barde.
Meanwhile, the NAPRI team had before leaving Damaturu paid a courtesy call on Yobe State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana.
The Deputy Governor, who warmly received the team, stressed the importance of the outstation for livestock development in the region which according to him was for animal husbandry.
The Deputy Director, National Animal Production Research Institute, Dr S T Muhammad; Programme Leader, Poultry Research, Dr Idris Abdullahi; and Institute Secretary, Malam Lawan Saminu, were at the cock exchange programme.
