Prof Umar-Buratai heads c'ttee to strengthen ABU's Advancement and International Education Directorate
Prof M I Umar-Buratai is now heading an eight-member committee raised by Ahmadu Bello University to strengthen the Directorate of Advancement and International Education (DAIE).
Umar-Buratai, former Dean of Arts, Ahmadu Bello University, teaches at the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, where he was, at one time, its head.
Prof Umar-Buratai's latest assignment was made known when the committee was inaugurated on Thursday, 17th July, 2025 by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed.
The committee was constituted with a clear mandate to reposition the Directorate for greater effectiveness, strategic alignment and impact.
It is also expected to oversee full implementation of recommendations of the CASE Reports (2009 & 2010), propose necessary reforms and lay a strong institutional foundation for the Directorate.
Inaugurating the committee, the Vice-Chancellor urged the committee to identify clear operating procedures, workflows and performance expectations, including a short-to-medium-term workplan aligned with the university's broader goals.
The committee, according to him, was also saddled with the responsibility of reviewing and restructuring stakeholder engagement strategies, institutional linkages and communication strategies for donor relations, fundraising and visibility.
Prof Ahmed said the committee was expected to also aassess level of implementation of MacArthur and Carnegie funded programmes and ensure final closure.
He also urged members of the committee to determine any other relevant issue(s) not covered by the terms of reference.
Ahmed believed that members of the committee's institutional memory of the university's resource mobilization efforts, strategic planning and leadership experience were essential to driving the successful repositioning of the Directorate.
The committee is given eight weeks within which to round off the assignment and submit report, effective from the date of its inauguration.
Responding , the Chairman of the committee, Prof M I Umar-Buratai, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for the confidence reposed in them.
Prof Buratai assured the University Management of their commitment to delivering on their mandate.
He further assured that they would work diligently in coming up with new and innovative roles that would be implemented at the Directorate.
Members of the committee include Prof Shuaibu Aliyu Shehu, Department of History; Prof Balarabe M. Jahun, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; and Prof Tonie Okpe, Department of Fine Arts.
They also include Prof M K Isah, Department of Local Government and Development Studies; and Dr. Muhammad Hashim Suleiman, Department of Mass Communication.
Others are Engr. Salisu Gaya, Iya Abubakar Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IAIICT); and Malam Hamza Sani, Registry Department, who will serve as secretary
