Horticulture Is One Of The Largest Components Of Agriculture --Prof Babajo

The Director, Division of Colleges of Agriculture (DAC) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Prof B.A. Babano has described Horticulture as one of the largest area within the crop-based components of Agriculture and host the largest number of crop species ranging from fruits, vegetables and omamentals.
Prof. Babaji who made this known at the
42nd Conference of Horticulture Society of Nigeria held at Balarabe Tanimu Conference Hall, IAR on Monday.
He said, within three groups are the medicinal, romantic, herbaceous, spices, beverages which play a key roles in providing mankind and his animals with food and feeds, medicine, fibre and shelter.
According to him the theme of the conference is apt and timely, " Strategic Roles of Research Innovation and Extension in strengthening National Horticultural Technology for Sustainable food production".
Prof. Babaji added that considering the national and global food crises being experience world-wide.
The Director said, this is as a result of inflation in the cost of food commodities caused by high cost of Agric inputs, natural and man made disasters( Climate Change) inconsistent government policies.
"Iam of a strong belief that from the Topics of the Keynote address,Lead papers and other technical papers that will be presented in the course of the conference will proffer solution to this looming calamity".
Professor Babaji said the challenge pose by Global warning/climate change on the environment and agriculture in general threatened our basic existence and scientists world over are aware of this snd are doing a lot to mitigate these impacts of Climate çhange both on the environment and agriculture in particular.
