NiMet to install automatic weather station at ABU Centre for Energy Research and Training
Nigerian Meteorology Agency (NiMet) will establish a mini-Automatic Weather Station (AWOS) at the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to support licensing requirements for the operation of the Nigeria Research Reactor-1 (NIPR-1).
Also, the agency will collaborate with the institution’s energy research centre towards the promotion and downscaling of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), as well as maintain the meteorological instruments installed in the mini-automatic weather station.
Yet again, NiMet will permit the institution’s staff and students with interest in teaching, knowledge acquisition, research and training in climatology/meteorology and have access to the agency’s meteorological and climate data or information for research activities subject to the NiMet data policy.
The resolve by NiMet to do all these things for the centre was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) both parties – NiMet and CERT – signed for collaborative research and development activities.
In pursuance of the collaboration, both parties equally agreed to jointly work together to carry out research activities leading to world quality outputs in meteorology/climatology, nuclear science and technology, as well as material analyses.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, signed the collaborative research deal on behalf of the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), while the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, signed for NiMet.
The MoU signing took place in Abuja on Monday, 30th June, 2025, establishing the terms and conditions under which the collaborative research activities will be carried out and funded.
Under the agreement, NiMet additionally undertook to identify locations to carry out gaseous and NORM mapping around airports as well as provide cost and expenses for use of consumables necessary for the enhanced instrumentation training in nuclear science research.
On its own part, the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) undertook to provide a suitable land space for the establishment of the mini-automatic weather station in addition to providing adequate infrastructure for effective running and maintenance of the station.
The centre is also obligated to provide technical support in developing soil fertility analysis to enhance NiMet’s capacity in seasonal climate predictions and climate-smart agricultural practices.
CERT is to develop NiMet’s capacity to carryout gaseous mapping, analysis of harmattan dust and NORM evaluation of airports, as well as train the agency’s staff in basic and applied nuclear science and related analytical techniques for environmental analysis.
The centre will also use its expertise to encourage and facilitate conduct of collaborative high-impact inter-agency research in climatology, meteorology, nuclear science and technology and their implications.
CERT will further use its research expertise to enhance the capacity of NiMet in the provision of products such as E-SCP, Annual Climate Review Bulletin, Quarterly Climate Review Bulletin, Agro-Meteorological Bulletin, and Drought and Flood Monitoring Bulletin.

Jonah; and the Administrative Secretary, Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Ahmadu Bello University, Malam Hamza Sani, witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.
