By Idris Umar, Zaria
The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Kabiru Bala, has described the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, as a man of integrity, commitment, and dedication.
Speaking to journalists in his office at the Samaru campus, Professor Bala said, “I have had a long-standing relationship with Professor Ahmed. He is a good man—hardworking and highly committed. I know his character very well and I wish him success in his tenure.”
Reflecting on his own time as Vice Chancellor, Professor Bala expressed satisfaction with the university’s achievements over the past five years. He highlighted the sustained peace on campus as a major accomplishment, crediting God and the university community for their cooperation.
“Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic hardships, we remained focused and found ways to move forward,” he said.
Among key achievements during his tenure, Professor Bala mentioned the construction of new student hostels in the Dan Fodio section and improvements at the Shika Teaching Hospital, both aimed at enhancing student welfare.
He also noted the university’s partnership with Opay Bank, which provided support to students, as well as notable successes in local and international sporting events.
Professor Bala revealed that the University Council had approved a new policy that allows students to retake examinations. This initiative, he said, has significantly reduced the number of students dropping out of school.
However, he acknowledged that financial challenges, particularly during the pandemic, hindered some of the university’s plans. He also mentioned a legal dispute that resulted in significant financial loss, affecting the institution’s ability to pay electricity bills in recent months.
