Sabon Gari LGA to Become Zaria North: New Bill Gains Approval in the House of Representatives

The proposal to change the name of Sabon Gari Local Government Area (LGA) to Zaria North LGA in Kaduna State has received approval in the House of Representatives. The bill, introduced by Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen PhD, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was supported by Hon. Sadiq Ango Abdullahi, the representative of Sabon Gari Federal Constituency.

If the bill is passed and signed into law by the President, the name of Zaria Local Government Area will be changed to Zaria South LGA. The bill seeks to amend Section 1 of the First Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution to effect these changes.

During the debate in the House, Hon. Sadiq Ango Abdullahi highlighted the cultural and historical reasons that support the renaming of the two local government areas. This move follows an earlier attempt in the previous National Assembly, where the bill passed its second reading but was halted for further discussion.

This new effort aligns with the previous attempt, which had the backing of Hon. Garba Datti, the then representative of Sabon Gari, and was led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during the debate. If approved, this change will bring a significant cultural and administrative shift to the region, reinforcing the historical relevance and identity of the areas involved.

The proposed renaming aims to honor the historical ties and traditions of the Zaria region and is seen as a step toward addressing the long-standing administrative and cultural concerns of the local communities.
